Impromptu is a live digital design competition where CSUN’s most talented designers and artists go head to head in a live battle of creative wit and technique.

If you are intersted in competing send a pdf of your best work to joseph.bautista@csun.edu - but keep it under 5MB!

In addition to the competition there will be a silent skateboard auction with decks for sale customized by graphic design students & professors. Bidding will start at $20 each.

Panel Discussion

Please join SAGA in welcoming three local designers who will be speaking at our Annual Panel Discussion.

This year our focus for Panel Discussion is to highlight graduates from CSUN that have gone on to do inspiring things. We have chosen to go with someone fresh out of school by a year or two, someone who graduated around five years ago and someone who has been in the industry for over 10 years. This way our students can hear about the journey these designers have gone on since graduating from CSUN.

Our first speaker is Nir Gutman. Nir graduated from CSUN a few years ago and works at BLT & Associates as a Junior Designer.

Our second speaker is Miguel Almena. Miguel graduated in 2004 and was a former President of SAGA. He is currently head of development and design at Newco International.

We will finish our discussion with Aaron Atchison (design guru). Aaron created the Mugo Player winning the Intel Digital Artist 2009 Awards. Aaron graduated over 10 years ago and is a design inspiration.

Gajin Fujita is a graffiti artist from East Los Angeles. He is a member of LA graffiti crews K2S (Kill 2 Succeed) and KGB (Kids Gone Bad). He was born in 1972 to Japanese parents. Fujita holds an MFA from the University of Nevada and a BFA from Otis College of Art and Design.^[1] His work has been widely exhibited at galleries and museums such as Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art (Kansas City), L.A. Louver Gallery and several international venues in Switzerland, Greece, and Belgium.

Fujita blends Eastern techniques (anime, partitioned screens), and elements (geishas, warriors, demons), with Western, urban imagery (Latino graffiti, U.S. pop culture imagery) in a way that is stunning and vibrant, yet harmonious. His works embody the cultural and class contradictions that are an integral part of urban Los Angeles.

Assembly Bill to bring funds to CSU & UC

For those who prefer taxing Big Oil in order to fund the CSU and UC over both layoffs and tuition hikes, here is something valuable and concrete you can do:

Show your support for Assembly Bill 656 by signing the online petition today. Simple and easy, only takes a couple of minutes.

2) Call them and urge them to support AB 656--Torico.

At present California is the only one of 22 petroleum producing states (including Texas and other "red" states) that does NOT have a severance fee for oil and natural gas extraction.

AB 656 will tax oil companies for extraction of natural gas and oil from California, and will provide dedicated funding to the CSU and UC.

AB 656 is still active, and according to Torico's office, there will be a big push for it, including campus tours (but not CSUN this time around). The California Chamber of Commerce opposes this bill and pretty much any others that would tax the rich, but it enjoys broad support from non Republicans. Your representatives need to hear from you.

Art(Raw)09 is an international juried competition open to all subjects and mediums, sponsored by ifontis.com, aimed at stripping art down to its fundamental elements; composition, technique, movement, line, shape, or use of color and light in relation to the medium applied. Submitted piece(s) may fall anywhere along the spectrum of artistic expression; chaotic/still, bright and saturated/monochromatic, significant/minimal, expressive in tone/subtle, etc.

This competition is open to all artists, age 17 and older. Open to all mediums except film, video, motion animation and audio. Examples of acceptable mediums include painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, still animation, photography, glass, computer generated, jewelry, drawing, textiles and mixed media. Submitted work must have been completed in the last 2 years.

The top 30 entries will be included in an online exhibition March 1, 2010 – April 30, 2010 and marketed to galleries for possible representation. There will be 11 prizes totaling $7,000 USD, will be awarded from the top 30 by February 15, 2010.

Students portfolios were reviewed by Disney Feature Animation Directors, Art Directors, Animators, Modelers, and Layout artist. Passion for the Possible Opening

On view now through April 4 in the Art Gallery is Passion for the Possible: The

Work of Sister Corita. The show is the first major retrospective in a decade of

the work of serigraph artist Sister Corita. Corita rose to prominence in Los

Angeles during the 1960s and is well known for her colorful, provocative

messages of hope and peace. Also famous for her inspirational pedagogical

methods as Professor of Art at Immaculate Heart College, Corita worked with

her students to produce dazzling 2 and 3-dimensional pop-art style artworks.

Guest curator Aaron Rose (Beautiful Losers) has transformed the gallery with

wall murals, a giant picture of Corita silk-screening as well as Corita’s images

and photographs of the time. The wall murals and box sculptures on view were

painted by art education professors Edie Pistolesi, Paula DiMarco and Ken

Sakatani and their students working under Rose’s direction.

Film director and graphic designer Mike Mills (Thumbsucker) led CSUN students

in a banner workshop, inspired by Corita’s teaching methods, in which they

designed and created 10-foot canvas banners which are now visible hanging on

the south wall of the Art Department.

A film screening of Rose’s documentary film about Corita’s life and two films by

Baylis Glascock, held in the Amer Theater, was well-attended by various CSUN

notables like Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication Dean Wm

Robert Bucker and Associate Dean Karen Kearns as well as actor Julian Sands,

who contributed to Rose’s film.

The opening reception for the exhibition, held on Valentine’s Day, featured silk-

screening stations led by designer Juliette Bellocq and CSUN students. Gallery

visitors were able to silkscreen Bellocq’s designs (inspired by Corita) onto small

cookie boxes and left for home with miniature Corita-esque box sculptures

filled with Valentines treats. A Ladies Choir comprised of members of the Silver

Lake music community sang songs inspired by Corita, one of which was featured

in Rose’s film. Red Hot Chili Pepper’s bassist Flea was spotted in the audience,

along with professors Lesley Krane, Peri Klemm, Samantha Fields and Patsy Cox.

“Connections” is a group exhibition of ten Los Angeles-based artists from OVERTONES and den contemporary art, featured at the OVERTONES gallery exhibition space. The artists are linked through a sequence of visual dialogs in art making, and the exhibition will include painting, work on paper, sculpture, and video.

Each artist has a singular vision and style, yet one connects to another in visual discourse reflecting contemporary consciousness about subjects ranging from nature to domesticity, and through use of text, patterning, collage, and craft, in works that include both abstract and representational imagery. Landscape and nature are represented in detailed paintings by Amir Fallah, Stas Orlovski, and Amanda Sefton Hogg. Elements from nature are also found in the sensitively assembled sculptures by Coleen Sterritt and Alexis Weidig. Use of craft in Nicola Vruwink’s crocheted cassette tape piece relates to
Margi Scharff’s intimate collages of discarded materials. Scharff’s arrangements are fashioned into mandala patterns, which connect to Gamma’s video installation of kaleidoscopic images of moving objects and people. The images layered in Gamma’s videos link to the layering of patterns and lines in the abstract works of Carole Silverstein’s meditative ink paintings on mylar and Tim Forcum’s dynamic oil paintings.

“Connections” provides the audience with a sense that, if one is open to seeing, relationships exist everywhere. In times of change like the World is experiencing today, the links between us are pathways to new opportunities and growth. The collaborative nature of the exhibition “Connections” and the artists presented, offer a visual space within which we can play, explore and find delight in the challenges that often come with the uncertainty of change.

Environmentalists often find it hard not to be sarcastic, or even angry, when working with individuals, organizations, and institutions that are ignorant of opportunities to protect the environment. The use of humor and metaphors is often employed by activists to point out playfully what is obvious to some, a way to open minds to new ideas. Artists have long pointed out the not-so-obvious through visual imagery, offering up symbols that can lead cultures to a new awareness. The following artists share this practice. Their work displays a type of logic that questions its viewers to think deeper and harder, and to make sense of what they present. An ecolOGIC, if you will.

Calvin Abe: ah'bé www.ahbe.com
ah'bé landscape architects, an award-winning, Culver City–based firm renowned for creating artful and ecologically sustainable urban infrastructure spaces, began a series of indoor art installations entitled Shreddings in 2003. Questioning our assumptions about what we do, this fourth iteration of recycled paper towers, or an abstract forest, furthers the dialogue on our current methods of waste disposal.

Kim Abeles www.kimabeles.com
Abeles creates poignant or apt signifiers of environmental conditions. In her Signs of Life series, which she started in 2004, she uses satellite photographs to pinpoint or map plant life as sculptural objects. Using model trees, she creates a magnified landscape of what little nature exists in urban areas.

Samantha Fields
Fields’s paintings depict nature’s extreme, environmental drama, unrestrained atmospheric landscapes, the sublime. She documents devastation from wildfires that questions our understanding of natural cycles and human impacts on the land. These dreamy, apocalyptic works remind us of our ability to forget that we live in a precarious, temporal world.

Khalsa creates typologies of nature, as in her Western Waters series artworks, which describe the proliferation of water stores in the Southwest. Consisting of over two hundred stores to date, these black-and-white photographs of store facades and signage signal a trend: clean water is either a limited resource, or it is an economically driven commercial product.

Manfred Menz www.manfredmenz.com
Since 2004, Menz has created an ongoing body of work entitled Invisible Project. Documenting famous sites around the world, where snapshots are usually taken by tourists, his digitally enhanced large-scale photographs reveal only the locations’ plant life. By removing the built environment, the artist shows us the evidence of nature’s role in today’s world.

Kathryn Miller
Miller’s work is deeply rooted in environmental issues, concepts, questions, and concerns. As a keen observer of the natural world, she combines knowledge of art and biology to illuminate human impacts on ecological systems and native habitat. With her dry sense of humor and sense of the absurd, she invents advertisements of green denial.

Glen Small www.glenhowardsmallarchitect.com
Small, a visionary “outsider” architect and founding member of SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, developed a socially and environmentally responsible sensibility with his early projects in the 1970s, when he conceived of the Biomorphic Biosphere and Green Machine. His designs were inspired by his goal to transform the Los Angeles basin into a futuristic eco logical region.

Lothar Schmitz
Through sci-fi like laboratory dioramas and sculptural systems, Schmitz shows how we shape nature with our desire to bring order or progress to our lives. With coiffed domestic settings, interiorized gardens, we have sealed off the natural world and have become psychologically immune to its unrestrained aesthetic.

Joel Tauber www.joeltauber.com
In his video work entitled Sick-Amour, Tauber falls in love with a sycamore tree, an emblem of our fragmented relationship with nature. Struggling to assist the sycamore to survive in the middle of a parking lot, the artist becomes an eco-warrior, a guerilla gardener, a fake civic worker—all to save the tree.

2D Anime Projects
An opportunity for Animation students to make 2D Hand drawn Anime projects after studying the exhibit, The Samurai Re-Imagined: From Ukiyo-e to Anime. Students will be exposed to historic traditional arts of Japan, which are the classical roots of contemporary Anime. From this influence, students will develop & create their own animations. Projects must be approved and will be produced in Sp 09 term. Some animations might be exhibited at the museum.

Students interested in participating in Anime Projects must meet these requirements:
· ATTEND LECTURE: THUR. OCT. 30, 11AM IN AC300, Pacific Asia Museum Presentation.

· Study and use their images as influences to develop story concept & designs for an animation.

· Animations must be 2D hand drawn (Traditional or Wacom Tablet assembled in Flash) with storyboards & character designs.

· THUR. NOV. 13, 3pm-6pm, DUE: PROPOSALS & PITCH, to seek approval.

The Samurai Re-Imagined: From Ukiyo-e to Anime
Feb. 19 - Aug. 9, Exhibit explores roots of popular Japanese art forms of Anime animation in traditional arts of Japan by examining images of iconic warrior, samurai. By juxtaposing depictions of samurai in Edo era woodblock prints, ink paintings, historical photographs, animation cels & drawings, original manga panels, and toys, the exhibition will demonstrate the ongoing links between fine art and popular culture in Japan.

'Dear Mr. President' Project Gives CSUN Community a Voice

Do you have something you want to say to the next president of the United States of America? Do you have a personal story or concern you want to share about this historic election? Faculty, staff, students and community members have until Thursday, Nov. 6, to visit Cal State Northridge's own version of the MTV-styled "confessional" booth.

The confessional booth is part of cinema and television arts lecturer Geri Ulrey's project: Dear Mr. President. The project involves the use of a mobile video booth located in a miniature house that travels around campus. Faculty, staff, students and visitors to campus are invited to record a video message addressed to the next president of the United States of America. Participants are encouraged to share personal stories, feelings and thoughts about their lives.The video messages will be organized, streamed from the project's Web site and mailed to theWhite House.

"My desire is to engage with young people regarding the political process," said Ulrey, who collaborated with the Art Department and several student organizations in designing the project and the house. "I believe that it is really important for people to hear themselves speak."

Geri Ulrey, Cinema and TelevisionArtsDepartment lecturer, instructs student Kemi George on how to balance the lighting for the camera used to record Dear Mr. President project letters. The project will be recording messages on campus at various locations untilNov. 6.

The video house is open now through Nov. 6 at various locations on campus. Ulrey, the project producer and director, said the project is nonpartisan. She plans to send the footage to the campaigns of both Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama, no matter who wins on Nov. 4.

The project was funded through a grant from CSUN's Judge Julian Beck Learning-Centered Instructional Projects. Beck grants are awarded to faculty to provide students with opportunities to actively engage in and ultimately become responsible for their own learning. Projects must be completed in one year and all faculty and staff are eligible to submit projects, either individually or as a group.

Ulrey said students are involved at all levels in the project, from inviting visitors to taping messages and editing and uploading the messages.

"This is an opportunity to bring art to large numbers of people who wouldn't ordinarily have the opportunity, and to involve students on all levels," said Kim Abeles, professor of art. She said art students helped design the Victorian style miniature house as an on-campus public art piece. The idea for the house design came out of the notion that individuals are most comfortable talking about issues in cozy chairs in their own home, she added.

"It's portable, yet it's also a cozy place,"Abeles added.

So far, nearly a hundred students, faculty and staff have taped messages with themes ranging from concerns about the economy to health care.

During his tapedmessage, student Shahar Aframian said he was concerned about taxes, gas prices and the economy.

"I think those issues are more important than Iraq and the war," he added.

Our recent trip to the Creative studios of Disney was a huge success. I took 25 Senior Graphic Designers for a full day of presentations, tours and lunch with the top creatives at the Disney Yellow Shoes Creative studios.

Held in a classroom setting, it was an invaluable experience in which they saw and heard the working process for all of the disney design work for 2008 & 2009.

The CSUN Art Department invites the public to view the work of its graduate students and meet the emerging artists themselves at the First Annual M.F.A Open Studios & M.A. Exhibition, May 10, 2008, 1:00-6:00 pm.

Featuring graduate work in photography, painting, illustration, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, drawing, public art, video, animation, and printmaking, this event is a must-see. The 2008 MFA Open Studios/ MA Exhibition was organized by the graduate students themselves, and will include the fresh new work of nearly 30 artists.

This event will be on the same day as a lecture by Amir Fallah, creator of Beautiful Decay art magazine (11-12:00), the opening of Melissa Thomson’s MFA Thesis Show (3-6:00) and the Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition (12-4:00).

MFA Open Studios/ MA Exhibition is being funded by the CSUN Art Department and the CSUN Painters’ Guild.

Paul Andrew Wandless author of Image Transfers on Clay will be giving a workshop at California State University, Northridge on Wednesday, April 23rd from 2-5pm, he will also present a lecture on his work on Friday April 25th from 1-3pm.

Artist Bio
Born in Florida, artist Paul Andrew Wandless has his studio in the Philadelphia, PA area. The artist works in a variety of media, crossing boundaries between traditional craft and contemporary image making in ceramic, painting and printmaking. A Presidential Appointee to the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) since 2003,
Wandless is one of a select few internationally prominent African American artists working in the ceramics medium. A published author, and curator of exhibitions, Wandless actively promotes artists whose work, like his, challenges traditional notions of image and the "art object." In his words..."ultimately, my work is meant to engage and inform the viewer by telling my side of the story of how I see the world through my personal experiences, insights and philosophy."

Adam Ross Earned his MFA from UC Santa Barbara. He has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, The Hales Gallery, London, Angles Gallery, Santa Monica, and the Sara Meltzer Gallery, New York amung many others. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Orange County Museum of Art, MaCA, White Columns, and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His most recent show was in 2007 at Suzanne Vielmetter Projects n Culver City. Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard has produced a new catalog on his work called "Adam Ross" which includes an essay by renowed art critic Barry Schwabsky.

INLANDIA opens at the Wignall Museum at Chaffey College

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Chaffey College and the Wignall Museum are pleased to present Inlandia. Like the 2007-2008 College Book of the same name, Inlandia assembles a group of artists who explore disparate ideas that make the Inland Empire a place with a cultural landscape all its own. The artists in Inlandia are based in TX, MN, OR, NY and CA, but regardless of their proximity to the Inland area, their works are informed directly by this regions political and social landscape or investigate ideas relevant to the IE community. Inlandia surveys the Inland Empire’s status as the fastest growing region in Southern California, the resulting suburban sprawl and ecological impact on the area, the beauty and inspiration of the landscape of the sprawling IE territory, and the characters that make this region unique and diverse. Artists utilize various media to comment on, record and realize the Inland Empire.

Inlandia features work by Edith Abeyta (CA), Adam Belt (CA), Sasha Bezzubov (NY), Margarita Cabrera (TX), Misty Cervantes(CA), Samantha Fields (CA), The Institute for Figuring (CA), Roman Jaster (CA), Sant Khalsa (CA), Kimberly Kolba (OR), Amy Maloof (CA), Michelle Mayer (CA), Thomas McGovern (CA), Jessica Newman-Skrentny (CA), David Rathman (MN), Alex Slade(CA), Jessica Swanson (CA), and Roger Tilton (CA).

Inlandia opens Monday, January 28 and runs through Saturday, March 1, 2008. An artist’s talk featuring various Inlandia artists (TBA) will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Wignall Museum, immediately followed by an artists’ reception at the Wignall Museum from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Artist talks with Inlandia artists Edith Abeyta, Roman Jaster, Thomas McGovern and Sant Khalsa are co-sponsored by the One Book/One College program. The schedule for these free lectures are:

On behalf of several members of the Department who attended this symposium I would like to extend congratulations to five graduate students (Kris Shoemaker, Art History, Deana Hight, Art History, Briana Simmons, Art History, Christine Terry, Art Education and Jennifer Smith, Art History) who presented at the recent Art Historians of Southern California Annual meeting, held at Pepperdine University. Each student spoke on her MA thesis work in a polished and professional talk. I have even heard of one student who got a job offer after her talk!

Prof. Peri Klemm delivered a revealing lecture on "Labor Theatre: The Birth of the Cabbage Patch Kids at Babyland General" which was very well received.

AHSC is a CAA affiliate that includes student and faculty members at the major LA area institutions, from Irvine to Santa Barbara. This year's presenters included students and faculty from UCLA, USC, CSU Long Beach, CSU Channel Islands, Otis and the Getty Museum. A very impressive crowd, and all the more impressive given that CSUN was represented by 6 speakers.

Over 100 students from the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication attended the event with guest speaker Judith Baca, Artist Founder/Artistic Director of
Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC)

Baca’s internationally renowned Great Wall of Los Angeles portrays the history of ethnic peoples of California from Prehistoric time to the 1950s Baca has exhibited nationally and internationally and has had visiting Fellowships at Harvard, Stanford and Dartmouth. Her work appears in the museum collections of the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian and at the Wadsworth Museum in Hartford, CT. During her career, she has earned many honors, including the Hispanic Heritage Award at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and CSUN’s Phenomenal Women Award.

The DEPARTMENT OF ART is pleased to announce the hiring of two new tenure track professors who will begin their career at CSUN in the fall of 2007.

Mark Farquhar
Assistant Professor, Animation

Mark Farquhar has been working as a CG Character Animator in the animation industry for the last 17 years. He has an MFA in Animation from the School of Cinema and Television at the University of Southern California and a B.A. in Telecommunication with an Art minor from Michigan State University. During his career, he has worked at Dreamworks Pictures SKG, Disney Feature Animation, Sony Imageworks, Pixar Animation Studios, and Warner Bros. Studios on feature animation productions. His experience ranges from animation development to feature production. Some of his film credits include Surfs Up, Open Season, Beowulf, Monster House, Chicken Little, Shark Tale, Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas, Toy Story 2, Osmosis Jones, Iron Giant, Marvin the Martian in the 3rd Dimension, and Mars Attacks.

In 2000 and 2006 Mark Farquhar was a featured conference speaker at Yunlin State University, Taiwan. In 2002 He spoke at animation conference held at Woosong University, Korea. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of Southern California, School of Cinema-Television and the University of California, Los Angeles Extension Program. He has also taught animation courses at Glendale Community College and Studio Arts. While working at Warner Bros., Dreamworks, and Sony Imageworks, Mark Farquhar has been active in studio training programs to retrain traditional animators and as a guest speaker for the studio internship programs. He remains active in the animation industry taking a consulting role for CG animation in a live action feature film and other freelance projects.

Meiqin Wang
Assistant Professor Art History: Asian Studies

Meiqin Wang earned a M.A. degree in Art History in China and a PhD in Art History from Binghamton University. Her area of Specialization: modern and contemporary Chinese Art; and contemporary art of Asian world and international exhibitions. Dr.Wang’s dissertation is innovative and wide reaching, and has allowed her both to interview numerous contemporary Chinese artists and to do research in several fields, from museum history to the politics of international art exhibitions, to the impact of rising globalization on art production. She has delivered scholarly papers at ten diverse academic conferences in the U.S. between 2003-2006 (an extraordinary amount for a full-time graduate student).

Her current research is centered on marketization, globalization, and cultural nationalism and how they are introduced to contemporary media, formats and issues, as well as Western modes of curating exhibitions.

Meiqin teaches undergraduate courses in Contemporary Arts of China and Asian Art & Globalization, and has taught art at vocational and elementary schools in Fujian, China. She has worked as a curatorial associate and co-curator for touring contemporary Asian art exhibitions, and has published a book "Paul Klee on Art", (in Chinese) in 2002.

Tom McMillin is a living legend in the Southern Californian art scene. In March of 2006 he was the first artist in residence at the historic Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Ojai. He was given the once in a lifetime opportunity to work with the famous ceramicist’s actual glazes and clay found at her studio that Beatrice Woods herself used. The Center asked McMillin to catalogue Wood’s ceramic molds and glaze formulas as well as to curate an exhibition.

Tom McMillin is the former Acting Chair of the Art Department at CSUN. Noteworthy public works include “Climatic Extremes” for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and “Surf Line Erosion” at both the Newport Harbor Art Museum and The Santa Barbara Museum.

The “Mentor to Many” exhibition will be in conjunction with McMillin’s first retrospective and a sight-specific installation in the Gerd Koch Gallery, "Climatic Extremes". As such, all SCIART galleries will be presenting the work of a modern master and that of his many students, providing the community with an exceptional opportunity to experience dynamic art; to trace a Mentor’s legacy; to be uplifted be seeing how one person’s inspiration and talent has so beautifully effected so many.

Aaron Hammersley, CSUN-Animation Alum @2004.

"Phantom Planet", special 1 hour movie premiere, Danny Phantom series finale, Aug 30, 8pm, Nicktoons. Aaron's credits are for both: Storyboard Revisionist and Storyboard Artist. He reports that he is currently working on "Fairly Odd Parents" as a Storyboard Artist and loves his job!

While Aaron was studying Animation at CSUN, he Interned with Nickelodeon Animation Studios and received a review as...the best Intern they ever had! He was hired full-time after graduating. While a student, he animated his own film "Canadian Suckerpunch" winning Honorable Mention, CSUN Annual Student Art Show and screened in Newport Beach Film Fest 04.

CSUN STUDENT gets 2nd screen credits on Simpson's TV 400th Episode Tonight!

This past Sunday, May 20th at 8:00 pm (7pm central time), The Simpsons HOUR-LONG 18th Season Finale aired on FOX!!! Two all new episodes were shown back-to-back. This finale also marks the 20-Year Anniversary of The Simpsons as an intellectual property (since the very first Simpsons short aired on the Tracey Ullman show in 1987!)

The second show, happens to be The Simpsons' 400th episode, AND CSUN Grad, Chance Raspberry's second show to receive a screen-credit as a character layout artist.

So proud of Chance Raspberry, who graduated from CSUN last Spring 06 with a BA Art, Animation Concentration.

Compared to many of the other departments at CSUN, the
art department has a very open door attitude. Walking
around the art buildings, located at the northern tip
of campus, you will find many classes in progress with
their doors wide open. On some of the nicer days,
students even workoutside. Projects for the ceramics classes
can be seenon display in the courtyard in the center of the art
wing, along with drawings, paintings and graphic
design work in display cases. The attitude of most
people you will find in the art department seems to be
very welcoming and open-minded. Simply approaching and
asking an instructor politely can get you into a
classroom full of hard-working student artists. So the
next time you walk by the art wing with its colorful
buildings and slanted roof tops, stop and consider

Think “Iron Chef” meets graphic design as CSUN art students are given “Concepts” in which they have to execute in 20 minute head to head elimination rounds. Based off the national Cut&Paste event, the designers' work will be projected live as they create it for all to see and for our judges to dissect. Food and a soundtrack will be provided. FREE!

Think you have creative talent and can do it on the fly? Think you are the best designer on campus? Want to be the envy of all your peers? Time to prove it.

“Impromptu” is a live digital design competition where graphic designers and illustrators compete against each other in an elimination tournament of creativity, technical ability, and wit. The competitors will work live and projected on walls, in front of an audience and panel of judges. An MC will host the festivities, a soundtrack will be provided, and no tummy will be left empty.

SAGA held its Second Annual Portfolio Workshop inviting Hamagami/Carroll Inc. and The Vyant Group to review student portfolios in a informal open review. 16 students participated in the reviews and dozens more watched and asked questions as each reviewer gave feedback on their student work.

What did you find most helpful in your interview? More particularly in your projects or presentation and the overall experience?

Luis Andrade (Participant): It was good. I wasn't expecting it to be some what an informal interview. I thought it would have been different. What was helpful was presenting my work to somebody other than a student or professor. It really made me dig deeper than just a class presentation. I described everything in detail and the process. The communication skills really came out. she had me describe my interest, like print/web/package before going into my portfolio, which helped ease into it so she knew what to expect. Overall, the Portfolio Workshop was great - a good preparation for Portfolio Review.

What did you think of seeing all of the reviews take place? What did you find most interesting...from the set up of the room, the interviewers, etc.

Max Schuster (Attendee): I thought that the reviewers were very tactful and constructive with their criticism which was very cool for us listening because the reviewers would often give reasons for why they thought something didn't work. They would've sometimes made suggestions on how to fix it. There was a lot of very good student work but the most impressive stuff was the home made presentations and leave-behinds. Not just stuffing 11x17 into plastic sheets. although a few people had just amazing work and it really didn't matter that they had a basic presentation. The black [table] cloths were a good idea...very fancy. A bunch of people got business cards. Two thumbs up!

We opened our second event of the semester with graduates Maria Fleischman from No Good TV, Michelle Leclerc from Samuels Advertising, and Jeff Birch from Hamagami/Carroll, Inc. Artist, Entrepreneur, and the architect behind The Guardian Line

Many comic fans -- and those in-the-know when it comes to the world of animation -- have experienced the innate creativity and boundless imagination that is Michael Davis. He's the architect behind The Guardian Line™ and co-creator of Static Shock!, a highly-rated, Emmy-award-winning WB & Cartoon Network show based on his life. Davis' career began as an illustrator, but over the years he's acquired a unique range of talents from artist and entrepreneur to teacher and mentor. And In 1992, Davis and three co-founders became pioneers with the creation of Milestone Media, which released an innovative, full-scale, multicultural universe of heroes and villains. The well-told stories appealed to Time Warner, resulting in one of the biggest joint-venture distribution deals in comics' history. The new universe of characters was distributed alongside the media giant's DC Comics.

Davis moved from Milestone to Motown in 1994, serving as president and CEO of animation and filmworks. His media company, Bad Boy Studios, which was founded back in 1987 (yes, before P. Diddy), continues to grow immensely and now has a mentor program with an impressive list of successful artists, directors and writers. In addition, he has created a line of educational materials called the "Action Files," for Simon and Schuster. It's the only reading curriculum based on comics that is taught in any school system. Davis comes to UMI as vice president of new media and shares his inspiration behind The Guardian Line™, its characters, and who will always be his superhero.
